Since the Brewery Museum Foundation will be located in the historic
William J. Lemp Brewing Company complex, the history of this important
and intact brewery will be prominently featured. Through historical
photographs, available oral histories, texts, and graphic representations,
visitors will learn the roles of the various buildings on the grounds. A scale
model of the Lemp Brewery will provide a three-dimensional "map" of the
Lemp complex.
St. Louis plays an important part in brewing history in the United States,
and this gallery will show visitors the background behind the city's brewing
industry. Not only "the Gateway to the West," St. Louis also became a
major locus for German immigration in the mid-nineteenth century. The
city once boasted 43 breweries operating at the same time, serving the large
German population, and taking advantage of the massive underground
cavern system for cold storage. The development of the Anheuser-Busch,
Inc., the world's largest brewer, will be a prominent feature of the display,
and how it flourished when the vast majority of its competitors are now
historical memories, will be examined.
